| Re: 2010 Australian Speedcar Title @ Avalon Speedway Celebrating seventy five years of Speedcar (Midget) racing is the 2010 Championship, being held at Avalon Raceway Victoria and hosted by the Victorian Speedcar Drivers Association in conjunction with Speedcars Australia. A special event, with a very special tribute. A tribute to one of the greatest Motor sportsman’s in the world. A quiet Australian that changed a format entrenched in tradition. A successful person in all things that took his attention. That Name is Sir Jack Brabham. There have been many words written on Sir Jack’s life, and it is not my place to write them again, but certain aspects can be repeated. A person who grew up with Engineering prowess, learning mechanical skills at a young age with his Velocette, having the drive to start a Mechanical Engineering course until interrupted by war and joining the RAAF. Not getting the chance to become a pilot, Jack did something better. He trained on Aircraft Engines and became an Engine aircraft mechanic working on Beaufighters. After the war Jack did his own thing working on cars for the local people, self employed. The magnetic draw to motor racing took place and Jack built his first Midget. Sir Jack became a successful Midget driver and created a name for him winning many state titles and three Australian Titles. However road racing got his eye and Sir Jack’s success in Australia allowed for a greater vision. To race in England and Europe, the centre of the world’s greatest drivers in Road racing. All the words have been said, but the most significant aspect of this time was how and when Sir Jack and John Cooper decided to go to Indianapolis. How does a very puckka stiffed lip British entity such as Coopers decided to take their little green road racing car, with half the horse power to the legendary Indianapolis. I think Jack was the culprit in this one. Was it down the pub, or in the garage sitting on fuel drums, as we all do and saying what if. The Americans must have all chuckled as the car was only up to the hub heights of the Indy roadsters. The part I love and we all can relate to this was being told off, yelled at, by the Chief Steward. “Why, what’s wrong? Sir Jack asked. You’re going too fast, you’re only a rooky! Slow down”. That event changed history as it put on notice the rear engine cars were the way of the future, and the cars that I love, those big front engine roadsters were to become obsolete. Indy changed forever from that date and Sir Jack has won three Formula One Championships, pushed his own car over a finish line, won world Championships with and in his own cars, raced his own cars at Indy, produced his own cars with Ron Tauranac, being the Chief Engineer. Sir Jack was like us all, like when his engine broke in Holland one time, he flies home to England, works all night to get a head together and parts, flies back to Holland, puts it together and goes racing. We have all done that, but if you thought Sir Jack had it easy, it was not. Same dramas but on a grander scale. The quite Australian, who won races at the lowest possible speed, a man who understood engineering principles, a pilot who owned his own planes, a gentleman, an ambassador for Australia, who has accomplished so much and yet still very approachable. For those attending the Speedcar Championship Meeting, shall have an event unsurpassed, as Sir Jack has accepted an Invitation from the VSDA to attend. Sir Jack cannot guarantee his presence, arrangement have been made for his transport, and if all is right, shall be the Grand Marshall and presenter of the trophies for the winners. How good is that. And you can view the car display for nothing including the car Sir Jack Brabhm won his first world Formula one Championship with. I wish there was more days to go and more hours. Second wish is that Sir Jack gives the FIRST place Trophy to An Australian. ![]() ---------- Post added at 12:36 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:34 AM ---------- PS to Jawa, I will shout you into the pit, if you want as my guest. |
