illegal cars

Now i know this may stur a few ppl up but i have a question.

Now when it come to the legilty of cars most ppl are just thinking about the engine , but it has come to my attention lately that there is plenty of cars getting around that are illegal , weather it be the engine, fuel tank, roll cage, firewall thickness or window mesh or even the name plate .

But my question is why are these cars aloud to still run, is it the fact that the ppl looking at them dont know what there looking for or dont know the rules , or is it that they dont care as long as its not the engine.

I think these things could be looked into , but these are just my opinions, i would like to know what everyone else thinks on this matter.

Re: illegal cars

Ah yes, scrutineers, another of the thankless tasks of speedway. I spent many a year as a scrutineer (for street stocks) at a number of tracks around the country, and at each one, the common denominator was that if I found anything illegal, it was my fault for finding it.

On several occasions, it was pointed out to me that an engine might be illegal (not as released in Australia), so I would go to a local dealer (ie, Toyota, Ford, Holden, etc) and after informing them why I was there, would be given the correct info. I would then have it in writing whether an engine was legal or not.

I did the job with the spec book as my guide. If anything on the vehicle was within spec, it was fine. However, if something was done to the vehicle, and it wasn't in the spec book, it had to be removed / bought in to spec by the next meeting. Anything we found that needed tending to was written in a log book, both that of the driver and the scrutineer, and was checked at the next meeting.

My biggest gripe as a scrutineer was when a new car would rock up 10 minutes before scrutineering closed, and they expected to race that same night, but that's another story.

Re: illegal cars

racelord, the advantage I had at a couple of the tracks was that I was also the Chief Steward, so if they complained about their cars during scrutineering, I could always give them something to complain come race time.

Re: illegal cars

These days people always look blame someone else. Read your rule books Folks the Legality of the race cars is the responsibility of the driver! Not the scrutineer. If I was going to check the 100 or more different rules that the cars are suppose to comply with then how long will it take to check each car better alone 30 + We would have to start checking on Friday night.

I have been a scrutineer for many years, covering juniors to super sedans I have done full daylight inspections and race night checks and yes I have missed minor things on some cars and I always find it funny that the people who bitch the most about it and call you incompetent or clame favoritism have never offered to help out but are always happy to point out your mistakes.
Why don’t they try to daylight 30 to 50 cars and see how much of your free time it takes, let alone on a race night 2 people have to look at 30 + cars and if they also race as we do get there car ready as well. Our race night checks are safety checks.
