Werner Greve

What can anybody tell me about this fellow? His name and nationality caught my name and I'm intrigued how a German got into racing midgets!

Re: Werner Greve

Werner Greve raced speedcars from about mid fifties to early sixties. He drove holden and offy powered cars for Don Mackay and was a team mate of Andy Mcgavin. Was reportedly eratic at times and a bit of a hot head. And yes,he was German.Hope this helps you a bit.

AMF, saw Werner Grieve drive many times at the Showground during the fifties, my understanding is he was a former German army officer. He was a very very aggressive driver and drove the white number 13 which was later sold to Don Mckay and driven by John Harvey the car which has now been restored.

No doubt Leadfoot will be along to tell us more including where Werner Grieve is now, last reports were he was living in the N.T.

Werner was a German engineer who was caught in Mexico when WWII broke out. There is quite a compelling story of the events that followed and the courage he needed to survive made midget racing tame by comparison. He said " Speedcar racing is child's play to my experiences" Watch the newstands as I believe there is a very informative story coming out on Werner, soon.
He drove the McGee Holden in the 50's and the McGee Offy in the early 60's.
He retired to an apartment overlooking the ocean at Maroubra and passed away from lung cancer around 1990.

Thanks for that Tornado, always wondered what happened to Werner he is one driver i will never forget.

Another interesting speedcar driver of the fifties was Carlo Marchini obviously of Italian descent and a former Australian boxing champion. Does anybody have any information on him.

Hey, AMF, you are either psychic or you have heard about the story I have just written for Peter White! My story on Werner Greve could quite easily have been made into a movie! I could not believe what that man had gone through during the war years, and then to race midgets, and then, to top all that off he then........well, you will just have to read my story. Peter White tells me that it will be released around April. The last one has only just reached the news stands with my story on Johnny Peers. But the Werner Greve story makes all others pale in comparison!

I'm really looking forward to your story Bill. Just finished the Johnny Peers story (thanks to Gary for sending me over a copy).

Dad and Werner were lifelong friends. He only lived about a mile from us. I would often have dinner with him. The funny thing is although he was an engineer he knew nothing about cars! But he knew where the gas pedal was.

Another interesting character was Tubby Black.
