Gunnedah Speedway Primed for a Red Hot Sir Walter NSW Super Sedan Title

Gunnedah Speedway Primed for a Red Hot Sir Walter NSW Super Sedan Title:

A strong field of Super Sedans will this Saturday night (December 3) congregate to fight out for glory in the Sir Walter NSW Title for season 2005/06 at Gunnedah Speedway, the first time the North Western NSW venue has hosted the title in over 15 years.

In the past five years the NSW title has been claimed by interstate based drivers, with defending champion Wayne Brims, although residing in Tweed Heads (NSW), does the majority of his racing in Queensland. The last NSW based winner of the title was Ron Pyne back in season 1999/2000.

History was made during last year’s NSW title when Wayne Brims and his father Ross Brims (1997/98 winner) became the first father and son to win the same event.

Wayne Brims will be the driver to watch this Saturday night, being the defending champion, but he will not have it easy with the likes of John Leslight Ron and Luke Pyne, former two times NSW title holder from Victoria Mick Nicola, Tony Barklimore and a host of others preparing to get their hands on the winner’s trophy.

Veteran Paddy Ward will be one of the many NSW based drivers looking to wrestle their title back from the interstate trio, and the 57-year-old driver of the # 24 Ford Mustang is confident of winning, and nothing else.

Who could argue with Ward, who placed third in the NSW title back in 1995, when you consider his form in recent years.

Like a bottle of wine, he is just getting better with age, and although he has not yet tasted victory this season, he would love nothing more than the 2005/06 NSW title to be his first.

“I am going into this event like I do any other, and that is to win,” stated Ward. “It’s going to be quite an interesting event especially with such a strong field, and my aim is to stay out of trouble in the heats and then go hell for leather in the final.”

During last season’s running of the NSW title at Gilgandra Speedway, Ward was well placed in fourth only to have a steering arm failure, which saw him retire from the event.

“I was quite disappointed last season as I knew that I could have had something for the front runners, but that’s all hindsight,” recalled Ward. “I know this weekend I will use that disappointment as motivation, and hopefully we can be in there with a good chance of winning the deal.”

Dark horses for the Sir Walter NSW title will be Frank and Jeremy Cross, Robert Carrig, Queenslander Gary Pagel, Ian Brims, Keith Sims and who knows, who else could spring an upset performance.

The last time the NSW title was staged at Gunnedah Speedway was back in season 1989/90 when Queensland based Keith Rubeck, who defeated John Brown (nominated this weekend) and the late Grenville Anderson.

One thing is for sure that if it’s excitement that you are after this Saturday night, then Gunnedah Speedway is the place to be.

Supporting the Sir Walter NSW Super Sedan Title will be Street Stocks, Junior Sedans, Fender Benders and the Junior Quarter Midgets.

The Junior Quarter Midgets will be part of the pre-program at Gunnedah Speedway this season and a field of 10 youngsters will compete on a special infield track that has been built. Their racing is scheduled to get underway between 1pm and 4pm, with the main program beginning at 6pm.

Admission prices for Gunnedah Speedway will be $ 15 for Adults, aged pensioners $12.00, $ 10 for kids aged between 12 and 16, and kids under the age of 12 will be admitted free, if accompanied by an adult.
