Podium for Kye Blight

Saturday saw the Blight's Racing team head to Kellerberrin for the Steve McWhirter Memorial and round one of the 4 Crown Production Series. Though young gun Kye Blight hadn’t raced there before he was quietly confident have a top 5 spot.

Kye was the first to admit “when I was setting the car up for the first heat I didn’t have a clue how to get it turned into the corners”. The field of 12 made its way out for race one and after two attempts of starting they got there on the third try and although starting in the last spot Kye quickly went to work on moving up and by race end had secured the fourth spot. “The track is certainly different to anything else I have raced on, but it was good fun” explained Kye after the race.

Before his second heat the young star fiddled with the cars set up to help it turn into the corners but went too far and it was a little bit too loose for his liking. The second heat saw Kye start from position two and once the green flagged dropped got the jump on the field and was never headed.

In his final heat for the day young Kye Blight would roll out and start out of fifth. In this race he would not only have to race against some of the best Production drivers in the stat but also his farther Darren. The protégé would work his way to second but once there he didn’t quite have the answers and was happy to finish their behind his dad.

Due to delays throughout the day the feature would be cut down from 20 to 15 laps. In a race that was plagued by cautions Kye would hold down third spot for a number of laps and then pass Garry Sutton to make it a Blight 1-2, however this didn’t last with Sutton regaining second spot a few laps later.

As the race got closer to the chequers the states number 1 had to be content with third as he explained shortly after the race “the track went black on the curb and soon as you got off that curb you just went backwards so I just had to sit and make sure I made no mistakes”.

The Blights Racing Team will now turn their attention to the 20/20 Production race being held at Kellerberrin in July.

Kye would like to thank his great sponsors for their loyal support.
