Scott Cannon (NSW) has started his 2009 DIGGA Australian V8 Dirt Modified Championship campaign in emphatic fashion by taking the two heats and the feature event at the Perth Motorplex on Friday 13th February.
Whilst the locals struggled in the greasy conditions, Cannon adopted the high line around the 500m black oval and showed a clean pair of heels in all events.
Daniel Forbes ended the evenings pointscores in second place from Norm Kennedy third.
Veteran Peter Cox was a no show as he is still awaiting the arrival in Perth of vital driveline components.

Saw him at the Perth Motorplex in the final last night and he looked really fast and the car was set up awesome.

The field is set for the running of the 2009 DIGGA Australian V8 Dirt Modified Championships at the Manjimup Speedway in Western Australia. This year’s event will be staged over 2 big nights, Friday February 20 and Saturday February 21. A stout field of 20 cars will be in attendance, all looking to etch their name in the history books as Australian Champion.
Travelling from Queensland comes Peter Britten, Luke Oldfield and Andrew Drake.
Oldfield was National Title runner-up to Tim Morse at Murray Bridge (SA) two seasons ago and placed third last season to Morse and New South Welshman Mark Robinson.
Britten is one of the many youngsters in the division who back in November last year was the first driver to pilot an American Troyer built car to victory in a feature event outside of the United States.
Drake is competing in his fourth season and is one of the most improved drivers in the division in recent times with a third place finish at Lismore Speedway (NSW) behind Robinson and Darren Latimer (QLD) and ahead of American Gary Tomkins on February 7th.
From New South Wales come Scott Cannon, Jai Stephenson and Rian Collier.
Cannon is the only former National V8 Dirt Modified Champion in the field and indeed captured his crown when the title was last contested in Western Australia in the inaugural Perth Motorplex season in 2000-01.
Stephenson 21, is the youngest competitor on the list and comes with five years experience in the Junior Sedan ranks and was placed second in last seasons Queensland State Title.
Collier debuted in speedway racing in V8 Dirt Modifieds six seasons ago and lists his career highlight as his first Feature Race win and his ambitions are to have fun and go forward.
From Victoria we have Darryl Hickson and Steven Milthorpe. Hickson was one to watch last season at the National Title at Warrnambool (VIC) as he managed a hard fought heat race victory over Tim Morse and finished third on points after the conducting of the 12 heat races. He steadily dropped of the pace in the final but has abundant talent thanks to his sprintcar racing appearances in Victoria.
Milthorpe has been on the scene for 14 years and started off racing in Super Modifieds in Victoria and is certainly one hot shoe as shown by his National Summer Slam Series victory in 2006-07.
The lone South Australia Cory Read, who has almost been adopted as an honorary West Australian, needs no introduction to Western Australian V8 Dirt Modified fans as from his last three ventures to contest WA titles he has captured the crown on all three occasions including amassing an amazing 6 out of 8 heat races as well. Was on the pace at Warrnambool last season until unceremoniously punted off the track by another competitor.
The great hope from Western Australia appears to rest on the shoulders of Peter Cox, Bryn Lake and Norm Kennedy who have all shown the pace to mix it up with the best there is as have LeRoy McKay and Vin Smith who have all tasted National Title experience.
Peter MacPherson, Brad Cooper, Daniel Forbes, Nigel Smith, Greg McKay and Mike Coles will all be contesting their first Australian Championship experience.
Friday 20th sees two rounds of three heats over ten laps followed by two mini-feature races over 15 laps each, the first to be contested by drivers lying first, third, fifth, seventh etc on points and the other mini-feature containing the drivers second, fourth, sixth, eighth etc. Each mini feature will carry double points to be awarded.
Saturday 21st will see a further two rounds of three heats followed by the all important running of the 2009 DIGGA Australian V8 Dirt Modified Championship with all cars lining in highest points scorer to lowest.

As taken from v8 dirt mod site

Novacastrian Scott Cannon sits atop the points table heading into the final nights competition in the 2009 Digga Australian V8 Dirt Modified Championships. Cannon (135 points) sits just ahead of Peter Britten (123) and Luke Oldfield (120) on a points table top-heavy with eastern state visitors

I was at manjimup and Britten passed drake on the outside of turn 2. He didn't push drake out of the way it was a clean pass... Congrats to britten and team on win. Also congrats to Scott cannon and team for winning best presented car and crew and for there awsome engine change in the pits to make the feature.
