All eyes will be on the coastal Victorian city of Warrnambool this Friday and Saturday night (Feb 15 & 16) for the running of the 2008 Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil/Quantum Racing Industries Australian V8 Dirt Modified Championship. 32 of Australia’s best V8 Dirt Modified drivers will do battle at Sungold Stadium over two nights to decide who will wear the coveted ‘Australia #1’ into 2009.

President of Dirt Modifieds Australia, Steve Robinson, is thrilled with how the Title weekend is shaping up.

“We will have cars from every state except the Northern Territory and Tasmania” said Robinson. “There are four cars making the trek across the Nullaboar from Western Australia, there’s a strong contingent coming down from Queensland, the local Victorian cars will be out in force, plus there is good support from New South Wales and South Australia. We’ve got one of the biggest Australian Title fields for some time and I think the fans that come out to Premier Speedway on Friday and Saturday night will be treated to some pretty spectacular racing”.

Waiting for each and every one of the 32 competitors in Warrnambool will be a brand new right-rear tyre, thanks to a deal brokered between Dirt Modifieds Australia and American Tyre & Racing Service.

“The Australian Title is our showcase event and it is important that we (Dirt Modifieds Australia) do whatever we can to make it a success” said Robinson. “Dirt Modifieds Australia are working hard at promoting V8 Dirt Modifieds and this initiative with the right rear tyre for each competitor is an example of that. It’s certainly something that has been well received by the drivers”

The popular Calcutta will kick off the Title weekend on Thursday night before all attention turns to the high banks of Sungold Stadium for Friday night’s action. Each driver will contest two heat races on Friday night, with the top six point scorers then given a shot at breaking the one-lap track record.

Saturday night will see each driver contest two final heat races, with the point standings at the completion of the preliminaries determining each drivers fate heading into the Championship finale.

The top 16 point scorers will qualify directly into the Australian Championship finale, with the top six qualifiers’ contesting a time-trial to determine their starting order. Those drivers qualifying outside of the top 16 will contest a B-Main, with the first four finishers qualifying for the Championship finale, to be contested over 30 laps.

The 32 competitors in the 2008 Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil/Quantum Racing Industries Australian V8 Dirt Modified Championship are:-

    AUS 1 Tim Morse

    VIC 71 Tim Goss
    VIC 15 Murray Atkin

Looking at that list there are 10 if not 12 guys who, given the right set of circumstances and baring any unforseen incidents, have a legitamate chance of winning.

Heat races are going to be incredibly tough. Given the high speed nature of Warrnambool, its going to be pretty tough if you are starting down the back of the bus in the feature.

    Bring on Friday night.

It sounds like the top end of the field is very tight.

    Night one done and dusted.

29 cars in the pits with Tim Goss, Ray Klarich & Scot Whiting not competing.

Norm Kennedy made contact with the wall in practise wiping out his front end. Came back for the heats but was in the wall in his second heat after a coming together with Mark Robinson.

Fellow WA traveller Bryn Lake also gave the concrete a touch up in his first heat and was unable to start his second heat. Will be back tonight though.

Lenny Levett, Andrew Pezzutti & Scott Cannon all had engine dramas after practise. Cannon broke 2 pushrods but was right for the heats and was 5th highest qualifyer. Levett was a DNS and I dont think he will be back. Pezzutti is probably in Mt Gambier as I type doing some shopping for bits and plans to be racing tonight.

Ray Eggins spun (may have been helped) and was stopped in turns 1 & 2 only to be collected by Trevor Perry. Given the location of the sun at the time I dare say Perry would not have even seen Ray parked. End result is Eggins car is trashed and wont be back. Perry should be right for tonight.

Jai Stephenson went over in a big big way coming out of turn 3. Not sure what started it but he got some serious air and rolled a few times. He was ok, plenty of panel damage and I think they may be back tonight if the damage isnt too great.

Morse & Oldfield tied on top points with a win and a second in each heat. Latimer is 3rd then Hickson, Cannon, Scott Conlin, Lloyd Hobson, Cory Read, Scott Drew & Hernie. Robbo is 11th after a tough few heats, Milthorpe is 18th.

Conlin recorded the fastest lap of the 6 heat races and in his last heat was leading by a country mile only to have the diff crap itself coming into turn 4. Will be back tonight though.

Milthorpe was also leading his second heat and looking pretty strong only to lose brakes after the muffler came off and took out the brake lines. Had he have won that heat instead of having to pull out (and I think he would have won comfortably) then he would be equal third in points. Instead he is in 18th.

Thats about it. A bit of carnage, a bit of contravercy and bad luck. It wouldnt be an Australian Title without it. But tonight will be a different story. 2 more heats and a 30 lap feature. Plenty of sleepers a little down the order who are in with a shot tonight.

Im not to sure how everyone else went but Morsey came second and first in his heats. They had one lap time trials Tim broke the lap record. The other top point scores were Oldfeild, Latimer, Cannon,Hickson, Conlin then Hobson Thats all I know for now. Hopefully BenG can help us there.
