With rain threatening over & around Mid-Western Speedway Darlington, the SDAV Hot Rod Club had their fingers and toes crossed that they were going to get some sort of result in the Thunder Down Under Series Round five event & a result eventually was forth coming after the hard work by the managing Mortlake Speedway Club brought the track back into racing condition after rain interruptions allowing Shannon Meakins to race to a win in the feature event.

The current Victorian Champion Dean West (# 1 Lumbar Softwoods) led every lap of heat one with Allen Luckett chasing him right to the finish. Meakins & Kali Hovey raced third & fourth from lap four to the ninth & final lap & when the flag dropped to end the race, West had a win over Luckett, Meakins, Hovey, Phil Jenkins, Glenn Lawless (# 99 Wally’s Fabrications) & Dylan Linehan.

Heat two was a similar result for Luckett, accept it was Meakins in front of him from start to finish & Hovey (# 22 Ribeau Interstate Transport) behind him in third place. Those top three didn’t change with West in fourth at the finish then Linehan (# 28 Bronson Sheetmetal), Jenkins & Lawless.

Due to the rain, there was no time for a third heat to be raced so the drivers starting position for the final where based on two heat runs with the top of the points starting at the front of the field meaning Meakins (# 84 Aarons Car & Bin Removals), Luckett, West, Hovey, Jenkins & Lawless greeted the starter in that order.

Linehan was unable to start the final due to a water leak & the green dropped with Luckett (# 16 Mega Autos) getting the best start & winning the drag race to turn one with Meakins & West behind.

Meakins took the lead on lap six of fifteen when he got the better of Luckett & the very next lap West moved on into second passing Luckett also. Hovey moved ahead of Jenkins on the final lap.

Jenkins, Hovey & Lawless were in their own battle back further & the laps soon ran down, Meakins crossed the line ahead of West, Luckett, Hovey, Jenkins & Lawless.

Next event is March 28th the Ray Welsh Memorial at Rushworth
