The SDAV Hot Rod club headed to Swan Hill to do battle at ‘Sonic Speedway’ & a healthy field of ten made the trip up north where Kali Hovey got the better of a front row start & went on to win a great battle with Dean West formally the Victorian champion of the division, the win was Hovey’s second feature win of the season. All ten cars made the start for the first heat race over an eight lap distance with Russell Hovey & Glenn Lawless (# 99 Wally’s Design & Fabrications) at the front of the field followed by Kali Hovey & Neil Sixtus then Shannon Meakins & Allan Luckett in the first three rows. Taking the green Luckett (# 16 Mega Autos) moved quickly from fifth to first to cross the line ahead of Lawless & Kali Hovey on lap one with Hovey & Meakins moving into second & third on lap two. West from tenth was cutting through the field and on lap six he made a pass on Meakins to move into third place whilst a spin on lap seven to Dylan Linehan (# 28 Bronson Sheetmetal) resulted in the chief steward declaring the race. Luckett was the winner from Kali Hovey, West, Stan Marco, Lawless, Phil Jenkins, Russell Hovey & Linehan whilst Sixtus (# 7 Better Bin Hire) didn’t finish due to electrical issues and Meakins was a non finisher also. Sixtus was unable to start heat two leaving nine to greet the flag starting behind Marco, West, Linehan, Jenkins, Luckett & Meakins making up the first three rows. West (# 1 Ace Timber & Hardware) got the better start and led the field through lap one with Marco chasing & Jenkins in third. On lap five Meakins made a pass on Jenkins to take third. Whilst West still commanded the lead Meakins & Kali Hovey past Marco on lap eight to move into second and third as the field crossed the finish line with Marco fourth, Luckett, Jenkins (# 3 Wilson Signs), Lawless & Russell Hovey the finishing order. Linehan failed to finish with fuel pump issues. Kali Hovey & Meakins started on the front row of the third heat with Lawless & Luckett then Jenkins and Russell Hovey (# 26 Ribeau Interstate Transport) making up the first starting six. Sixtus was unable to start again & Linehan couldn’t repair his issue from the second heat either. Kali Hovey (# 22 Pizza Box Geelong) led lap one from Meakins & Luckett. Over the eight lap distance of the third heat Kali Hovey led every lap from Meakins and Luckett to take the win with West, Marco, Jenkins, Lawless & Russell Hovey rounding out the order. A ten lap final in the ‘Thunder Down Under’ series round awaited the field & a toss of the coin put the top point scorers through the heats at the front of the field for the green flag. Kali Hovey & West off the front row with Luckett & Meakins on row two & Marco (# 2 Baywood Auto Wreckers) & Jenkins on the third. Luckett through ignition issues, failed to start. Against last years state champion Kali Hovey got the better start as she hit the front & led the field to the start finish line to complete the first lap with Meakins (# 84 Aarons Bin Hire) & West chasing her. Meakins spun in turn four on lap two as Hovey was putting the pressure on out front & he was sent to the rear of the field for a restart. Lap three Hovey in the lead had West & Marco behind her & this carried on for the next few laps before West slipped past Hovey on lap seven only for her to snatch the lead back the very next lap. The last two laps finished with Hovey taking the win from West, Marco on his first podium finish since his return to the division, Meakins, Jenkins & Lawless whilst Russell Hovey was a non finisher. After the race win Hovey thanked those closest to her. “That was awesome. Thanks for the great race Dean. Thank you to my mum & dad for everything they continue to do to keep us racing & to my husband Shannon the Victorian Champion for his support.” SDAV Hot Rods thank their supporters: Mega Auto Parts Ribeau Interstate Transport Carriers Intech Tuning Purrfect Cool Auto Air Better Bin Hire The Pizza Box Norlane Wally’s Design & Fabrication Written by Dean Thompson DMT Sports Media for SDAV Hot Rod Club Inc.
