The annual open wheel spectacular at Rosedale Speedway once again invited the SDAV Hot Rods to be part of the show and after three heats & a final Gippslander Dean West led the field to the finish line to pick up the win with Kali Hovey & Phil Jenkins finishing in the other podium placings.

The club welcomed back Russell Hovey on track after missing the start of the season whilst Phil Jenkins who was the last driver to win after taking out the feature result at Drouin Speedway in December, started where he left off by winning the first heat at Rosedale in front of Allan Luckett & Shannon Meakins.

Jenkins began on pole with Meakins alongside and Luckett & Russell Hovey behind then Glenn Lawless, West, Kali Hovey (# 22 Norlane Pizza Box) and Neil Sixtus to fill the grid.

Jenkins was quick off the line and Luckett slipped past Meakins on lap one to move into second with Meakins filling third place. For the whole race distance, Jenkins led them and finished ahead at the finish line with West finishing in fourth then Russell Hovey, Kali Hovey, Sixtus & Lawless (# 99 - Wally’s Custom Fabrications).

Lawless began heat two at the front of the field with Russell Hovey alongside and Kali Hovey, West, Meakins, Luckett, Sixtus & Jenkins (# 3 P & S Automotive) at the back. A false start seen the field stack up again ready to fire.
Russell Hovey got away at the start with West & Lawless following on lap one across the line. Jenkins passed Lawless to take third on lap three before lap five claimed Sixtus & Meakins (# 84 Kilmore Towing & Transport) had a coming together where Sixtus lost a front wheel and copped damage & Meakins copped a flat tyre, both failed to finish.

West, Russell Hovey, Jenkins, Luckett (# 16 – Purrfect Cool auto Air), Kali Hovey & Lawless were the finishing order for heat two.

The final heat race began with the state champion West from pole and Kali Hovey alongside, then Luckett, Jenkins, Lawless, Meakins, Sixtus (# 7 Better Bin Hire) & Russell Hovey the rest of the field in order.

Like heat two there was a false start on the first attempt in heat three and then a second re-start when Kali Hovey’s car came to a stop.

West had a terrible start with Jenkins taking the lead on lap one from West, Meakins & Russell Hovey (# 26 Ribeau Interstate Transport) back in fourth place. On Lap two West claimed the lead from Jenkins before Jenkins pulled out of the race on lap four with a broken panard bar/mount.

West (# 1 - Ace Fencing & Hardware), lead Meakins & Russell Hovey on lap five before Sixtus was the next to head infield after a black flag due to smoke from his car. West beat Meakins & Luckett & Russell Hovey, Kali Hovey & Lawless.

The feature field was robbed of three starters when Sixtus due to an oil leak, Meakins engine concerns & Luckett electrical issues failed to start.

A toss of the coin put the lowest point scorer to the pole position and Lawless, Kali Hovey, Russell Hovey, Jenkins & West started in this order.

Kali Hovey got away well with the start leading Lawless and West on lap one. On lap two this changed when Kali was in front of West, Jenkins & then Lawless before West hit the lead on lap three.

For the next seven laps West held the lead & greeted the chequered flag whilst Kali Hovey drove well to hold out Jenkins for second then came Lawless and Russell Hovey.

The SDAV Hot Rod Club will now go to Wangaratta on the 31st of this month for the re-scheduled ‘Thunder Down Under’ round from January 10th.
